Coconut flower sugar – a niche product from Indonesia

The ambitious start-up company KULAU GmbH from Berlin has specialised in importing coconut-based products. The name of the enterprise speaks for itself: in Papua-New Guinea’s creole language Tok-Pisin, “kulau” means “young, green coconut”.

The company exclusively sells sustainable, naturally manufactured fair-trade organic products. In its selection of suppliers, KULAU adheres to the highest standards. Both in regard to product quality, good working conditions and environmentally-friendly cultivation methods at the plantations, the German importer makes high demands on its foreign partners. Professional sourcing is therefore very important to the company when it comes to locating suitable buying markets for its products in tropical countries. This is where the help of the Import Promotion Desk (IPD) came in handy. The agency introduced KULAU to the suitable partner, saving the company a lot of time and money.

IMPORT PROMOTION DESK OPENS THE DOOR TO THE EU MARKET FOR KYRGYZ EXPORTERS

The Kyrgyz export company Vega Plus has made the leap into the European market. In February 2017 the  company exhibited at the BIOFACH Exhibition in Nuremberg and introduced its sustainable farming products to the international specialists at the event. The Import Promotion Desk (IPD) prepared Vega Plus intensely for the trade fair and also supported the company through the “last mile” with match-making. The success of the exhibition was quickly followed by the first business deal with Swiss importer Tinibaev Waldgeschenke KlG.

The IPD supports German importers in their search for super fruits

Klaus Böcker GmbH is an importer of exotic fruit products. Its portfolio comprises fruit juice, paste and concentrate from more than 500 kinds of fruit in more than 500 specifications. To continually expand its range of products, the company is always on the look-out for new suppliers. For this reason, Klaus Böcker GmbH turned to the Import Promotion Desk (IPD) – and made a catch: The IPD provided the German importer with a new trade partner in Egypt.

Tropical timber from sustainably managed forests

IPD OPENS UP NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR PERUVIAN TIMBER EXPORTERS ON THE EU MARKET

The tropical rainforest is at risk from overexploitation and fire clearance, and this has brought trading in tropical timber into disrepute. Timber companies from countries like Peru therefore encounter difficulties in exporting their tropical wood products to the EU market. They are supported by the Import Promotion Desk (IPD), the precondition being that their timber is verifiably sourced from legal and sustainable forestry. Maderacre Rio Acre SAC is a company that meets the criteria of the FSC, demonstrating in practice that responsible forest management can help to protect the rainforest.

The agency introduced KULAU to the suitable partner, saving the company a lot of time and money.

applied for admission to the IPD programme with the aim of increasing sales of its products, especially to the organic sector in Europe. Since 2018, IPD has successfully liaised new business partners for Beni Ghreb.

Many food-conscious consumers prefer natural, vegetarian products that are rich in nutrients. Traders from developing countries can also benefit from the expanding market for healthy food. The exporter SERO Colombia, one of the Import Promotion Desk’s partner companies in Colombia, is a case in point.

Exotic resources for new taste sensations

The Frankfurt-based company tropextrakt specialises in importing exotic resources for the food sector. Since its foundation in 2002, the enterprise has established its reputation with the introduction of exotic niche products. tropextrakt supplies the big players of the sector with trend-setting fruit and plant products from tropical countries. The company’s success is due to the on-going search for reliable suppliers of high-quality products that meet the superior requirements of German and European clients. To that end tropextrakt has established a solid network of exporters in various countries, especially in South America, in recent years. The Import Promotion Desk (IPD) has now been able to furnish tropextrakt with another valuable contact by introducing the Frankfurt-based company to a highly eligible partner at the SIAL 2014 trade fair: Frugy from Colombia.

SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT THROUGH EXPORT PROMOTION

Within the framework of the “Nepal Trade Integration Strategy” GIZ and the Import Promotion Desk (IPD) are supporting a model project promoting the export of medicinal and aromatic plants. The project shows how specific sectoral support can help establish efficient value creation chains and enable Nepalese firms direct access to the German trade market. The half-time evaluation of the export promotion programme in Nepal showed that in 2016 alone Nepalese producers exported to the EU medicinal plant products worth 1.2 million Euros.

The Import Promotion Desk (IPD) and its partners in Peru support responsibly operating companies in their efforts to export certified timber products to Europe. An essential part of IPD’s work is to create awareness of European quality and sustainability standards in Peru’s private and public sectors. At the same time, the IPD provides German importers with an alternative buying market, which will allow them to optimise their purchasing activities and increase their product variety. In this way, international development cooperation and import promotion go hand in hand.

IPD - Made for Europe

More Imports for Europe‘s Economic Success

German and European companies need import promotion. And that is exactly what the Import Promotion Desk (IPD) provides.
The IPD is an initiative in Germany to promote imports. It is the hinge between European importers and exporters from selected developing countries and emerging nations.

Factsheet

IPD - Promoting trade in emerging and developing countries

Participation in international trade is an important condition for lasting measures to combat poverty in emerging and developing countries. Yet companies and associations in the partner countries lack the capacities, know-how and competencies to exploit the opportunities presented by international export markets. European importers, on the other hand, often have neither the contacts nor sufficient appreciation of the potential of the markets in the partner countries.
Import Promotion Desk (IPD) is the instrument for import promotion in Germany, efficiently and lastingly bringing together the interests of exporters in the partner countries with those of the European import sector. In doing so, IPD closes a strategic gap at the interface between development cooperation and foreign trade.

IPD presents exporters at in-cosmetics virtual - the new, online meeting place for personal care ingredients

Even if this year a personal meeting at in-cosmetics is not possible, IPD takes advantage of this interactive networking event.

Many products are available in organic quality.

All exporters presented are carefully prepared by IPD. Thus ensuring they are equipped with the required certificates for the European market and are familiar with the demands of the European trade sector.
Immediately before and during the virtual trade fair IPD will offer practical support for the exhibition, including e.g. compilation of current market information, technical support and sales training for successful communication with potential customers.

For two weeks - from 26 October to 6 November 2020 - IPD offers importers and expoerters of the IPD programme the opportunity to network online.

IPD supports exporters from South America and Africa offering a wide range of processed fruits & vegetables as well as herbs & spices. This includes frozen products, fruit pulps and dried fruits and snacks. The suppliers are processing e.g. guanabanas, passion fruit, pineapple, mangoes and bananas. But also products such as black and white cumin, cardamom and special spices such as rue from Ethiopia are included.

All IPD companies were visited and checked by IPD before the pandemic. Thus ensuring they are equipped with the required certificates for the European market and are familiar with the demands of the European trade sector. Immediately before and during the virtual event IPD will offer practical support for the online meetings, including e.g. compilation of current market information, technical support and sales training for successful communication with potential customers.

Are you an exporter based in one of our partner countries? And would you like to export your products to Europe? To enter the selection process, please contact us.
